Dealing with a Bully
I hate thinking about politics, talking about politics, watching politics. But like most of us now I can’t look away from the trainwreck that is our political system at the moment.
When I was in elementary school, I was taught that there were three branches of government, coequal, that served as checks and balances on one another.
Now it turns out there’s only one branch of government, a tyrannical president and his henchmen.
The Supreme Court? Well, we know they have their agenda of keeping women and working people in their place, which is down.
But what about Congress? More specifically what about the Republicans in Congress?
I see their relationship with our would-be tyrant as a marriage begun in love, only later to find out they were in an abusive relationship with a controlling, vindictive monster.
The relationship starts out well, the crowds roar with approval at every sickening, disparaging remark Dear Leader makes. And wow, Congress Republicans are on the winning team.
But then they’re only winning if they are totally enthralled and totally obedient to the tyrant they were so in love with. They found out quickly that this love was withdrawn the minute they stepped out of line or had a thought of their own that deviated from Dear Leader.
Battered spouse syndrome? We’re living with battered Congressional Republicans syndrome. They tiptoe around the tyrant in the White House because he mustn’t be upset, they have to keep him calm, they have to endure the madness that spews from his lips every single day.
Why? Because they want to hold onto their fiefdom, because having this “power” is the only thing they know. They don’t seem to have a life beyond running for office and trying not to offend Dear Leader.
They’re afraid of making any offhand remarks in case the tyrant in theWhite House hears about it and chases them down, calling them scum and losers and dogs. Or worse, finding someone to oppose them in their primaries.
Does this not have all the signs of an abusive marriage? Starting in love, descending into terror, a primal fear of taking one step wrong because of what the consequences might be?
Congressional Republicans, sometimes the worm has to turn. Sometimes the abused have to confront the abuser and say, “No more!”
It’s obvious you’re not ready to do that. But I have a feeling the people of the country might have had enough of this bully and his erratic, crazed swings that are destroying our country and our reputation in the world.
We shall see come November what your cowardice has led to.
